FROM EARTH TO SKIN
Over the last several years, consumers have been more and more inquisitive about how their skincare products are made and the players involved in their value chain. Building on their sustainability efforts, the most far-sighted beauty retailers decided to put more skin in their traceability game. To do so, they started sourcing tea tree oil, one of the key ingredients for their skincare and haircare goods, from Fairoils.
Fairoils is harnessing Farmforce’s first mile data capabilities to manage thousands of smallholder farmers in Africa. Aside from Kenya, where the company already reached full ethical essential oil production traceability, Fairoils is also implementing Farmforce in Tanzania and Madagascar. As it stands, they have digitally recorded around 6,000 smallholders by using our farm management software.
The essential oil supplier is primarily set up to support international brands, outside of Kenya, meaning all of their products are exported. Tapping into Farmforce-enabled first mile data, Fairoils can deliver the utmost visibility on the sourcing of their seeds, petals, or bark for production of ethical oils, thus engaging sustainable beauty retailers.
Besides providing one of their customers with 100% earth-to-skin traceability of tea tree oil production, Fairoils also relies on our agricultural supply chain software for handling a dozen more crops, including ginger, macadamia, and avocado, to name a few.
Thanks to Farmforce, Fairoils not only supplies traceable products to their customer but also rewards them with a first mile bonus, including valuable insights into their living wage, education level, internet access, etc. Receiving such critical information about farmers, personal care retailers can back their sustainability claims and quantify their progress toward their goals.
Gathering details about thousands of farmers through conventional methods, like paper and spreadsheets, would be a painful and time-consuming process. By leveraging our farm record-keeping software, Fairoils is achieving first mile tracking with ease, saving both time and money.
“Because of Farmforce, we have no significant challenges along the first mile of our supply chain. We have big-brothered this whole exercise,” said Taylor.
Although being more difficult and expensive than working with a few large-scale farms, Fairoils chose to collaborate with many individual smallholders to maximise their socio-economic impact. By choosing this route, Fairoils attracted a trustworthy and responsible beauty brand that resonated with its ethos.
“When partnering with smallholder farmers, they become in control of their destiny. We give them an opportunity to engage on an international scale,” Taylor said.
Apart from unleashing new business opportunities for smallholders, our supply chain visibility software has been a key tool in some of Fairoils studies. To be more specific, by monitoring how long each farmer dedicates to each stage of the growing cycle, Fairoils can spot inefficiencies at the farm level. With digital results, farmers can practice sustainable agricultural activities, increasing productivity and profit.
“We’re trying to understand why some tea tree farmers are spending significantly more time weeding versus others when their yield is less or the same. So, when you have this clear data that Farmforce can capture, you can drive down the cost,” one famous beauty retailer’s Sustainability Manager reports.
