After navigating through the meanders of the vegetal and essential oil value chains, in this post, we’ll share how Farmforce enables sustainable production of these vital ingredients for the beauty industry.
Essential Technology for Oil First Mile Tracking
Our software for farm management has capabilities to trace a wide range of essential oil-bearing crops, including macadamia nuts, tea tree, rose geranium, ylang-ylang, avocado, ginger, cinnamon, bark, clove bud, eucalyptus, and sesame. Ensuring higher production traceability along the first mile of the oil supply chains, Farmforce can facilitate the certification process. Furthermore, some of our system features can help neutralise vegetal and essential oil-related unsustainable side effects:
- Anti-child labour surveys:
- Cooperatives and multinational corporations (MNCs) in the personal care industry can leverage our Survey feature to gather useful farmers’ information (e.g., age, educational level, school attendance). Linking farmers’ digital profiles to their family members, our supply chain visibility software will let organisations foresee any children’s engagement on the farm. To add to that, coops and MNCs can also integrate data gathered from other investigations into our digital tool. By merging and tracking all these details into one place, users will easily spot any telltale signs of child labour (e.g., children missing school). Finally, you can share data collected in Farmforce with Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS) community facilitators. Doing so, you’ll help promote remediation strategies such as educational support.
- Anti-adulteration quota management:
- Using the Polygons functionality, Farmforce users can measure the farming area for each grower. Combining it with the forecasted yield per unit of area, you’ll work out smallholders’ quota, which are the maximum amounts of essential oil-bearing crop they’re allowed to sell. Leveraging our Certification & Quota Management module, you can store and track farmers’ allowances in our database. Doing so, you’ll seamlessly notice any delivery mismatching which could be associated with crop contamination. This feature is also handy for reducing the risk of trading uncertified harvests.
Application of Our AgTech
We have customers who use our advanced first mile traceability solutions to achieve 100% earth-to-skin visibility for their tea tree oil production in Kenya. On top of that, the essential oil supplier has extended the implementation of Farmforce to Tanzania and Madagascar. With our farm management software, through collaboration, we’ve digitally recorded around 6,000 smallholder farmers! And they seem to appreciate the advantages of supply chain visibility.
Aside from streamlining the companies’ operations and providing them with data to back their sustainability claims, Farmforce also had a positive impact on farmers’ livelihoods. By monitoring these datasets, companies could promptly flag any inefficiencies and run timely pieces of training (i.e. sustainable farming techniques). As a direct result, farmers increased their crop yield!
